Dr Mahesh Jayaram
Dr Mahesh Jayaram is a Senior Lecturer at the Department of Psychiatry, University of Melbourne. He is also coordinator for the face to face and Online Masters of Psychiatry course. He completed his training in Psychiatry at India in 2000 and moved to the UK where he completed his membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists. He became an editor of Cochrane Schizophrenia Group (2009) and worked as a Consultant Psychiatrist for 7 years in the NHS prior to moving to Melbourne in August 2013. His areas of research interest include evaluating novel treatments for schizophrenia and has authored and edited numerous Cochrane systematic reviews relating to this. His work comparing risperidone vs olanzapine was in the top most downloaded paper in 2006, as rated by Medscape. He also has an interest in service development and has conducted real world clinical trials to improve attendance rates in outpatient clinics. He has worked in numerous developing countries including India and Zambia and helped with setting up and supporting development of mental health infrastructure. He is now working on novel interventions for treating schizophrenia in a RCT and has just completed the world’s first randomised controlled trial using Twitter in disseminating evidence relating to treatments for schizophrenia. He is also working on guideline development for pharmacological treatment of acquired brain injuries. He has obtained about $1.5 million in research funding so far and continues to collaborate with clinicians and academics both across Australia and internationally.
